Why I Love Pushing Daisies

For those of you who never saw Pushing Daisies, it was a TV show about a man named Ned who has the ability to bring the dead back to life with a single touch.  However, if he touches them again, they will die forever, and if he lets them remain alive for more than one minute, someone else will die.  Ned uses this talent to solve murder mysteries with his friend, a private investigator named Emerson, by discovering the killer and getting the reward for their capture.  When Ned's childhood crush, a girl named Chuck, is mysteriously strangled on a cruise ship, he brings her back to life to solve the mystery, yet can't bring himself to let her die again.  The plot revolves around difficulties in his relationship with Chuck (remember, he can't touch her) as well as the investigations he becomes involved in.

Sadly, the show was canceled after only two seasons.  So as an homage to what was, in my opinion, the best TV show of the decade, here are my top three reasons why I love Pushing Daisies.

3.) The whole story is told much like a fairytale and often the scenery is reminiscent of one.  Everything is brightly colored and the music is very light and playful.  Touted as a 'forensic fairy tale,' I would describe it as Alice in Wonderland meets Clue.

This is 'The Pie Hole,' the pie shop that Ned owns...

...and the interior.

2.) Lee Pace is adorable!  His character is incredibly charming and I always wish that I were Chuck (even if we couldn't touch ;)

1.)  I am completely obsessed with Chuck's style.  She wears very feminine, elegant dresses.  And her hair!  If only mine could look that good...

Have you ever seen Pushing Daisies?  What TV shows do you miss?

A Twinkle in my Eye

Let me start off by saying that I have perfect vision.  20/20.  I can see just fine.  Yet for some reason, my mother felt it necessary to take me to the eye doctor this week.  As expected, my vision was just as good as always.  But there was something else.

The doctor told me that I had something 'adhered to my cornea.'  Of course, I freaked out a little bit, and asked him what it was.  Turns out, it was a piece of glitter.  I immediately realized that my brand new, purple glitter liquid liner must have gotten in my eye.

Now, being a makeup-lover with a very unsteady hand, I always get makeup in my eyes, so this didn't come as much of a surprise.  But because I was at the eye doctor, he numbed by eye and dyed my tears yellow with eye drops and used a metal scraper to remove the glitter.  An awful lot of fuss for a small piece of glitter, if you ask me.

Has anything like this ever happened to you?  What is your weirdest beauty mishap?

Deliciously Beautiful Skin

Lately, I've been trying to use less chemicals on my skin; after all, I'm young and want my skin to look the same. So I decided to do some research on natural skin care, and lo and behold, I discovered so many ways to treat skin for dryness, acne, etc. without using harsh chemicals or spending a lot of money. In fact, everything can be found right in your kitchen!

First off, olive oil is the most incredible beauty product a girl can use. When applied directly to skin, it is extremely moisturizing and non-comedogenic, so it doesn't block your pores. It's perfect for dry elbows and knees too. You can soak your nails in it for a few minutes to soften cuticles. You can rinse your hair, apply it all over your hair, and let it sit for 30 minutes for luxuriously soft, smooth hair. Sometimes I even put a little on my lips before I go to bed, and when I wake up in the morning, my lips are smooth and soft and supple. Olive oil can pretty much moisturize anything, as far as I'm concerned (that is, of course, if you can handle smelling like olives)!

Then there's honey. Honey is naturally anti-bacterial and has been found to cure acne. I like to warm it a little bit for better spreading, and then apply it to affected areas as well as my whole face. After 10-15 minutes, I rinse it off, and my skin is instantly soft. After a few days of doing this, acne disappears! Plus, it smells delicious :)

Finally, although I have yet to try this, I've heard fantastic things about using rice water as a skin toner. It evens out complexion while smoothing and soothing. You simply put uncooked organic rice in a bowl and add water until the bowl has about an inch of water above it. Stir until it becomes cloudy and then separate from the rice and - voila! - instant toner.

Have you tried any of these natural beauty methods? What other natural beauty methods have you tried?

10 Reasons I Still Shop At Claire's

In exactly a week, I will be seventeen.  Yet I am still mildly obsessed with the accessory/jewelry/makeup mecca for kids and tweens known as Claire's.  Why?

1.)  The products are CHEAP.  Especially when they have 10 for $10 sales, where you can buy 10 select items for $10.  I was there yesterday and bought a bunch of cute hair bows and even an earring holder, each for just a dollar.

2.)  The products have very appealing names.  It may sound silly, but this is important to me!  When given the choice between a nail polish identified by a number or a nail polish with a name like 'Magic,' I'll always pick the latter.  By the way, 'Magic' is a really pretty deep purple polish I bought yesterday :)

3.)  Many of the products are designed for convenience.  A lot of the products are very compact and easy to carry in a purse.  For example, I got a makeup compact yesterday with 6 shadows, a blush, 4 glosses, two mini applicators and a mirror, and the whole thing is no bigger than a hockey puck.

4.)  They have a wide array of sophisticated-looking jewelry.  They had a whole line of prom jewelry when I was there yesterday, and much of it was delicate and actually pretty.  Compared to the price legitimate jewelry, this is a pretty sweet alternative.  Also, they offer a lot of simple stud earrings that go with just about any outfit, usually only $8 or so for a six-pack.

5.)  The makeup comes in really cute shades.  Most 'adult' makeup lines (Clinique, Loreal, Maybelline) come in fairly bland colors.  Even the brighter colors are subdued, and I like my makeup to stand out!  All of the makeup at Claire's comes in a wide array of colors, from purple lipsticks to lime eyeshadows.

While yes, the whole store does have that generic little-girl-makeup scent, I can safely say that Claire's is one of my favorite places to shop!

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day is fast approaching! Here are a few of my favorite eco-conscious beauty products in honor of the holiday:

230_l

Burt's Bees Citrus and Ginger Root Body Wash - $8.00

Actually, anything by Burt's Bees could have made this list (except for their eye cremes), but in particular, I LOVE the earth-y, spicy smell of this soap. It gets the job done and it's quite invigorating. Other fantastic products: Lip Shimmers (especially the watermelon color), Coconut Foot Lotion, and Beeswax Banana Hand Creme.

p68222b

Kiss My Face Peaches and Creme Ultra Moisturizer - $11.95

This. Smells. INCREDIBLE. And oh my goodness, it leaves my hands so soft and smooth. The scent is long-lasting (a little bit strong at first but it backs off after a little while)...and how can you resist the name? ;)

ss_PlantLoveLipstick

Cargo PlantLove Lipstick - $20

Yes, this is a bit pricey, but the colors are beautiful (some were even designed by celebrities!) and the packaging is biodegradable. My favorite shades: Lindsay (by Ms. Lohan herself), Eve Pinky (by Whitney Port), and Gamba.
